The Kelly Sales Corporation Story

Kelly Sales Corporation began as F.H. Kelly & Co in 1920 when Frederick H. Kelly purchased Chandlers General Store. He had a short-term partner who was the bulk supplier of coal and other supplies. This man set up other customers in business in other areas at the same period in time.

A very shrewd businessman for the 1920 era, he helped to finance and set up repeat customers in business. At this time bulk raw materials were brought in by rail to a spur and building across the road. After a few years, his share of the business was acquired by the Kelly family members.

During the depression many area farms and families were carried on account with many having payments made direct from Albany from their milk checks while they were allowed to make additional charges. Many accounts were forgiven over time. The store was also the post office and a community hub.

Frederick Kelly passed away seven years after founding the business. The operation was taken over by his son Lauris E. Kelly with investment by his brother Dr. F. Howard Kelly, a dentist in Ogdensburg, as well as his sister and brother–in-law Helen and Dr. John Esposito of Saratoga Springs, NY. It has evolved over the years.

Electric power was introduced to the town around 1932. In 1940 the name was changed to Kelly Sales Corporation to follow the change in markets the business was serving.

The business had a fleet of vehicles selling service station equipment and supplies throughout the North Country. This covered the areas now known as St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Franklin, Essex, and Clinton counties. They became well known for their quality retreading of tires and sales of all types of equipment and supplies including the sales and installation of in-ground vehicle hoists, which we still service today.

During the building of the St. Lawrence Seaway, they were a successful supplier of mobile homes and began to move into sales of industrial supplies and equipment. In the 1950s Lauris F. Kelly, son of Lauris E. Kelly, returned to the family business and focused on the industrial equipment, supplying BOCES schools statewide with tools, paint booths, shop equipment, and area industrial manufacturers and plants.

In the early 1970s they began their expertise in sectional and rolling steel doors as well as the high-speed self-repairing doors. At this time the recapping operation was curtailed due to the cost of compliance with new cold-capping regulations. For many years vehicle alignments were a lucrative portion of the business along with on-road and off-road tire sales and service.

In the late 1970s, Lauris C. Kelly returned to the business after completing college and began as a door installer and helper to learn the business in the field. Now they are mainly focused on residential, commercial and industrial door installation of all types: upward acting, sectional rolling and high-speed fabric doors, door operators, rolling steel fire doors, commercial hollow metal doors, frames, and finished hardware.

They also sell side-folding accordion doors, sound-rated, sight partitions and fire-rated separation doors along with many miscellaneous specialties and the sales of toilet accessories and partitions to general contractors.

They pride themselves on sourcing the odd and unusual for industrial customers.

They provide on-site door service and repairs, vehicle hoist installations, repairs and annual inspection of vehicle hoists and rolling fire doors and shutters for most of the area’s major industry as well as large commercial businesses and general contractors.

These days the main focus of Kelly Sales Corporation is as it always has been - customer service and customer satisfaction. They strive to meet and exceed customer expectations with each sale and service. Kelly Sales Corporation looks forward to being of service and meeting your requirements.
